Rebelskamp is a band from San Jose, CA that hit the music scene in 2011, when they decided to take the "Natasha's Garage Sessions" (a weekly psychedelic improv jam-night held in a friend's haunted Garage) to the main stages of San Jose, the Bay Area, and beyond. The core members have remained the same since inception, with a few minor changes through the years. The current Rebelskamp line-up consists of the 3 Huelsenkamp brothers - Jesse aka Gee Willikers (vocals/guitar), Jeremiah Lee aka Verse (bass guitar/background vocals/etc), and Justin (synth/samples/effects), Juan Maserati (keys), and features Kenny Bundy (sax), and Phil Zigs of Relapse (lead guitar). Dan Gilardoni is the original drummer on the first 3 releases, but other drummers have also filled that position in recent times. Stylistically, their music has a genre of its own, because of its fluid nature. The vibe is known to fluctuate from Funk to Psychedelic Rock to Blues, and Soul, and the players pull from elements of Hip-Hop, Reggae Dub, and Jazz, managing to seamlessly blend moods, influences, and sounds into one. Rebelskamp is known to play off of the energy of the crowd, while conjuring new culminations and creating a sound to suit the environment, like chameleons of music.
Rebelskamp prides themselves on their impromptu and unwritten jam style, the core basis of their spontaneous songwriting, fueled by improvisation. Very much like Jazz players where one member starts a creative idea, with no script, the next one builds on that, and thus, songs are created out of thin air, like magic, without much discussion. This format allows for their songs to be freeform and to take shape all their own, and while some of the signature album tracks are revisited at live shows, no two songs are ever alike. They love to play off the crowd, and do songs in a “remixed” or extended fashion, and have been known to even perform parody versions of their own songs, or other bands songs, totally flipped, altered, or jammed out in some way. All members contribute, and there is usually not any one songwriter. The result is a beautiful, timeless sonic landscape, with a fresh vintage, funky, yet hard-hitting sound. With Gee Willikers’ high-pitched, vibrato-laden, falsetto voice lacing over slap-bass riffs and keyboard grooves, with solid drum-beats and spaced-out sound effects and textures, and signature sax, Rebelskamp has made a huge mark in their local scene, and is now poised to make even bigger moves.
Rebelskamp first independently released "The Kill" in 2013 to local acclaim, which they immediately followed up in 2014 with their second release, "InTentCity". This release got them more widespread attention and landed them a slot on the 2014 Vans Warped Tour, as part of the "Yo! Bring It Back" Tour. Their first two albums feature the top-notch lead guitar work of Mr. Jeremy Deneau, and each of their first 2 releases featured lyrics by San Jose’s hip-hop/battle-rap icon Dirtbag Dan. In early 2017, a third album entitled “Zaeliens” was released, an epic musical collaboration featuring over 10 talented guest musicians from their native San Jose, including poet Mighty Mike McGee, Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter Cado Dos Santos, Nehal Abuelata of Sweet Hayah, April Gee of ContainHer, Singer Genevieve Primavera, Singer/Songwriter Adira Shark, producer Sean Blak, Droo Zee of FTB, Cellist Natasha Littlewood, Mr. Philthy of Philthy Dronez, and Phil Zigler of Relapse. Since then, the Rebels were booked as the House Band all throughout 2018 and continuing into 2019 at Mighty Mike McGee’s “Tournamentertainment” a popular monthly comedy/poetry/music event held at the Forager in San Jose, CA every first Friday of each month. As far as new music, the Rebels have taken it to the next level with a full-scale recording Studio that they built by themselves, and there, at Grow Your Own Recordings, their 4th studio album is currently in the works. Since their inception, Rebelskamp has had the opportunity to grace many esteemed stages and epic venues, as follows:
